About the Course

Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 who wishes to operate certain vessels on the public waterways of Texas. See Water Safety Act for details. Boating courses are taught by TPWD Boater Education certified instructors, US Coast Guard Auxiliary and game wardens. With more and more people enjoying the lakes and rivers every year, it's important, for everyone, that boaters educate themselves on boating skills and seamanship. All classes are a minimum of six hours. More questions? Check our FAQ page.
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! The Lake Athens Property Association will be offering it's official, members only, TPWD boater education classroom course on Saturday, June 24 2023. 8:30AM - 4:30PM at the Texas Fresh Water Fishery Center. This is a live, old school classroom course with real instructors, boat models, actual equipment, hands on practice, discussion, and question/answer sessions. This is NOT the video course. Participants will take the test at the end of the course. Graduates will receive their official TPWD certificate and a LAYC Pennant. This certificate is required for boat operators born after September, 1993, 13 years and older, and is normally good for receiving a discount on your boat insurance. Students must be at least 12 years old to take this course. Graduates will be presented as members of the Lake Athens Yacht Club at the LAPOA Annual Meeting the evening of the course. The cost is $20, which goes to TPWD for materials and administration. Cash only please. Please bring a sack lunch and dock line. Space is limited, so don't delay! 2022 filled to capacity and received rave reviews! Help make Lake Athens the safest, most courteous lake in Texas!
