About the Course

Hunting & Shooting Sports 101 courses including, but are not limited to, Deer, Turkey, Hog, Waterfowl, Dove, Upland Game, Small Game, Western Big Game, Bow Hunting, Black Powder, Crossbows, Basic Firearm, Sporting Clays, Big Bore Rifle, Handgun, Silhouettes, 3-Gun, Trapper Education and Outdoor Survival. These 3-to-8 hour, hands-on seminars and workshops are designed for family members of all ages to learn more about the animals hunted, tools used in hunting and the shooting sports, and where to go in Texas to enjoy these activities. NOTE: Advanced courses do NOT issue the required hunter education certification. However, some advanced courses, such as bow hunter education, may issue separate certifications.

TRAPPING 101

  • EQUIPMENT: All equipment needed for this weekend is provided. If you have personal trapping equipment, please feel free to bring it.
  • LODGING: This is a rural location, there is no lodging on-site. Tent camping or RV camping is available. There are NO hook-ups for RVs. If you choose to bring an RV, please be considerate of others with generator noise and exhaust.
  • WHAT TO BRING: Classes are outdoors and hands-on. Hiking boots are appropriate. Long pants are encouraged to protect you against brush and insects. You should also bring rain gear, insect repellent, shoes you can get wet and dirty, sunscreen, a water bottle, sun- glasses, hat, alarm clock, camera, flashlight and/or headlamp and a personal mess kit for meals.
  • MEALS: Meals for this workshop are potluck. With some 50 people attending, please bring items for yourself and some to share. We have a small kitchen to prepare meals and volunteers to cook. Please bring shareable items to them upon arrival. If you have dietary restrictions, please prepare accordingly.
    • Make sure you bring a personal mess kit for meals. As a ‘Leave no Trace’ agency, we try to limit our environmental footprint. A wash station will be set up for you to clean your kit.
    • Supper Saturday night will be provided by the trapper conducting the workshop.
    • Please bring a desert or drinks to share.
  • DIRECTIONS From Alto: go 11 miles south on US 69, turn left (east) on FM 1911 go 2 miles to Cherokee Ridge on the right.
