About the Course

Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 who wishes to operate certain vessels on the public waterways of Texas. See Water Safety Act for details. Boating courses are taught by TPWD Boater Education certified instructors, US Coast Guard Auxiliary and game wardens. With more and more people enjoying the lakes and rivers every year, it's important, for everyone, that boaters educate themselves on boating skills and seamanship. All classes are a minimum of six hours. More questions? Check our FAQ page.

Boater Education Course will be taught by a USCG Licensed Captain with 30 years of experience operating vessels along the Middle Texas Coast.  In addition to classroom activities there will be outdoor educational sessions (weather permitting) led by the U.S Coast Guard Station Port O'Connor, U.S Coast Auxiliary Flotilla 7-10, TPWD Game Warden and the Port Lavaca Fire Department.  Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day of the course and wear comfortable shoes.  If you have any questions please call Capt. RJ Shelly at the Calhoun County Extension Office (361) 552-9747 or email rj.shelly@tamu.edu.
