About the Course
Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 who wishes to operate certain vessels on the public waterways of Texas. See Water Safety Act for details. Boating courses are taught by TPWD Boater Education certified instructors, US Coast Guard Auxiliary and game wardens. With more and more people enjoying the lakes and rivers every year, it's important, for everyone, that boaters educate themselves on boating skills and seamanship. - Know before you go - boat types, parts of the boat, vessel length, types of engines and drives.
- Before you get underway - capacity, float plans, fueling, trailering, boat ramp courtesy and vessel maintenance.
- Operating your boat safely - casting off, docking, navigation rules, night navigation, sound signals, Aids to navigation (ATON), anchoring, environment, and personal watercraft laws, and engine cut-off switch laws.
- Texas Legal Requirements of boating - Certificate of number and decals, titling and registration, buying and selling vessels, hull identification, who can operate, negligent and reckless operation, PFD requirements, Homeland security, Fire extinguishers, ventilation systems, lights, visual distress signals, sound producing devices, PWC, environmental, penalties and enforcement.
- Boating emergencies - risk management, boating stressors, dehydration, alcohol, PFD use, accidents, collisions, hypothermia, carbon monoxide, water and electricity,
- Enjoying water sports - passengers, who can operate vessel, environment, paddle craft, towed watersports, diving, hunting, other on water activities.
Students must pass a 60-question exam with a passing rate of 70%.
