About the Course

Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 who wishes to operate certain vessels on the public waterways of Texas. See Water Safety Act for details. Boating courses are taught by TPWD Boater Education certified instructors, US Coast Guard Auxiliary and game wardens. With more and more people enjoying the lakes and rivers every year, it's important, for everyone, that boaters educate themselves on boating skills and seamanship. Welcome to the BOW Spring 2026 Workshop for Boater Education! This is a two part class being held at BOW on April 11, 2026. Both sessions (am/pm) must be attended to obtain your State of Texas Certificate. The Texas Boater Education Course will teach students the following:
  1. Boating Terminology: Define and demonstrate knowledge of common nautical terms across all types of boating, including vessel, port, starboard, bow, stern, stand-on, and give-way.
  2. Boat Types and Characteristics: Understand various boat types and their limitations, calculate a boat’s capacity with or without a capacity plate, and explain proper loading techniques and gear securing on a boat.
  3. Required Equipment: The essential equipment for safe boating, including flotation devices, required lights, sound signals, and visual distress signals
  4. Trip Planning and Preparation: Master thorough boat trip planning and safety, including regulations, weather, readiness, hazard recognition, float plans, maintenance, and decision-making.
  5. Safe Boat Operation: Master safe boat operation, covering responsibilities, accident reporting, basic seamanship, and the dangers of boating under the influence.
  6. Navigation: Learn navigation rules and responsibilities, understand homeland security measures, identify navigation aids, and recognize marker types and purposes.
  7. Boating Emergencies: Learn emergency response, including assisting distressed individuals or boats, post-incident procedures, handling environmental stressors, storm response, carrying emergency devices, and effective communication with vessels and emergency hailing.
  8. Texas Boating Laws and Regulations: Learn Texas boating laws, focusing on rules, registration, and safety. This knowledge is essential for responsible and enjoyable boating while preserving Texas waterways.
Students must pass a 60-question exam with a passing rate of 70%.   This course will have a digital manual. You are welcome to bring a laptop or tablet with you to class for ease of viewing. We will have a printed version available during the class to utilize if that is your preference.
