Become an Instructor

The Boater Education Program's goals are to reduce boating and water related accidents and violations; promote safe, responsible and knowledgeable boating; and enhance boating traditions, ethics, and values. We now have more than 1,000 active instructors statewide, who include game wardens, volunteers, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Power Squadron, and professional educators. These volunteer instructors certify an average of 10,000 students per year.

Steps to Instructor Certification

  1. Complete the Boater Education Student Course if you have not already done so.
  2. Request an instructor application.
  3. Take your completed instructor application to a TPWD Game Warden, who will interview you and submit your paperwork to TPWD. If you need a list of game wardens in your area you may contact your nearest TPWD law enforcement office.
  4. Complete the Boater Education Instructor Training. If no classes are currently available, please contact us at 512-389-4846 Option 4 to speak to a Boater Education Training Specialist and arrange an instructor course in your area.
  5. Special provisions have now been incorporated for U.S. Power Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, certified school teachers, and certified law enforcement officers.
  6. After processing your application, interview, and course results, TPWD will mail you a Congratulatory Packet with your instructor card and instructor's patch.

    1. Download and complete the (4)  documents here.
  1. Take your completed instructor application, disclosure and Game Warden Interview Form (PWD 424-K0700) to your nearest Game Warden office, who will interview you and submit your paperwork to TPWD-Boater Education Department . If you need a list of game wardens in your area you may contact your nearest TPWD law enforcement office at https://tpwd.texas.gov/warden/connect/offices
  2. Review the required Instructor Manual (prior to attending the instructor training. After processing your application, interview, and course resuhttps://tpwd.texas.gov/learning/boater_education/instructor/training_aids.phtmllts.  TPWD will mail you a Congratulatory Packet with your instructor card, name tag and instructors patch.
  3. By attending this New Instructor Course, you will meet all of the requirements to Instructor Certification.
***THIS IS A VIRTUAL TRAINING.***
  • Registrants will be provided an invitation to the training's platform and after their registration is confirmed.
  • Before class:
    • Complete the Boater Education Student Course.
    • Scan a copy of your card or Certificate to include with those to be emailed to instructor@tpwd.texas.gov.
    • Review the required Instructor Manual.
    • Complete the pre-test you will receive after registration is confirmed.
    • Download Instructor Application Packet (4 pages) documents. Complete the application, Release & Acknowledgement, Authorization and Consent for Disclosure of Criminal History Information. Scan and email the completed documents to instructor@tpwd.texas.gov.
    • Do not complete the Instructor Course Training Report and the Mutual Agreement blank. Instructions will be provided during this training course.
    • Schedule a game warden interview with your local game warden. Take the blank form to your interview. The warden will work with you to complete the form, he/she will sign it and send it directly to Austin, Attn: Hunter Education.
    • Complete the post-test you will be sent at the training's conclusion.
