About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and bowhunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Bowhunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

SCHEDULE: Check-in will begin at 8:30am with the class starting promptly at 9:00am, we kindly ask that you arrive early so that we may get you checked in and start on time. We anticipate this course running til 5:00pm, if not a bit sooner, with a working lunch. Please pack a sack lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.

CLASS SETTING: This is an outdoor course; dress outdoor/weather appropriate, with closed-toe shoes – no sandals, flip flops, or crocs. When planning a hunt, we always check the weather so that we may dress accordingly.

WAIVER: The James B. Harrison Foundation requires all visitors to complete a liability release waiver upon arrival. A TPWD course waiver is also required.

PARENT/GUARDIAN ATTENDANCE: A parent or guardian is required to accompany and attend this course with their youth ages 16 and under; the adult does not need to register unless they want to complete the Bowhunter Ed Course themselves.

COURSE FEE: The field course fee is $15, cash exact change please, which covers the hunter education certification and course supplies.

SUPPLIES: All course supplies and equipment will be provided, including archery equipment.  NO personal archery equipment, firearms and ammo are not permitted on site.

CANCELLATION: Once registered, if you can no longer attend, for any reason, please log back into this TPWD registration and CANCEL your registration so that your seat will open up for another student. Instructors cannot cancel your registration!
