About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

Be sure to verify with the instructor that the class you are registering for is the Classroom Course.

You may also contact your local Texas Parks and Wildlife Department office or call TPWD Austin headquarters at 1-800-792-1112, ext. 4999.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

September 7th Youth Hunter Education Course

Local Information

We've added 5 seats to the class, however I will not have enough manuals to provide for those who sign up at the last minute. You will still be able to take the exam and so please register your youth with this in mind. The limit will stop at 35 due to room limitations.

This course is offered locally by Shawn Shreves who is Texas Certified Hunter Education instructor as well as one of the regional shooting sports directors for the Boy Scouts Buffalo Trail Council. I offer this course to provide a classroom only opportunity for youth here in west Texas. The student MUST be 9 years old as of the date of the class. Parents or other guardians of the youth may also attend the class with the youth.

The location of the training will be at Redeemer Church Youth Center "The Outpost" which is located at 3501 N Lamesa Rd close to Wadley and across the street from Hogan Park. Please bring something to drink and I normally have a few snacks and extra bottles of water as well.

Youth Protection
– The instructor is certified through the Boy Scouts with a current youth protection training and a background check as part of being a camp counselor for summer and winter camps.
Other adults who are not involved with the attending youth should seek certification through the Texas Parks and Wildlife agency.

The course is scheduled for 6 hours (9-3) allowing for ample time to cover the required materials and taking the test. A score of 75% is required to pass the class. We encourage adults to stay and listen (and help with test application and scoring). I do allow students to stay without a parent, as long as there are at least 2 other adults who will stay during the class to allow a 2-deep safe environment for the scouts.

If one of the students has special needs, I am glad to help accommodate them, however I would request the parent/guardian stay and help with any needs the student may have.

If you have any questions, you may e-mail me at shawn@shreves.org .

The cost is $15 cash at the start of the class. This is a required fee that I am required to charge by the state. Five dollars goes back to the state for the materials supplied and I use the rest to cover my cost for other materials and supplies.

The course outline and slide show are available at these links below. You DO NOT need to print them as I will have this material in class.
