About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

Class Details: The Wildlife and Natural Resources Committee conducts the Hunter Education Course in the Contestant Hospitality Room on the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo grounds, on Aniol Street, behind the S.A.L.E main offices. A $15 cash payment will be collected before class begins. Checks will not be accepted. You are welcome to bring snacks or lunch since we do not take a lunch break. Drinks will be provided. Parents are welcome to stay and are encouraged to do so for our younger learners. Finally, the room runs a little cold, so you may want to bring a jacket. If you have any questions, please contact Thom Griffith at 210-488-8781 or tdgriffith2@gmail.com. DIRECTIONS: I-35 South: Take Exit 160 and turn left on Frost Bank Center Drive. Drive approximately 1 mile and turn right on Aniol Street. Turn into the second gate on your left, across from Cameron Ashley Building Products. The building will be directly in front of you. I-35 North: Take Exit 159B and turn right on Frost Bank Center Drive. Drive approximately 1 mile and turn right on Aniol Street. Turn into the second gate on your left, across from Cameron Ashley Building Products. The building will be directly in front of you. I-10 West: Take Exit 579, follow the frontage road to East Houston Street, and turn right. Turn right at Frost Bank Center Drive. Drive approximately 1 mile and turn left on Aniol Street. Turn into the second gate on your left, across from Cameron Ashley Building Products. The building will be directly in front of you. I-10 & US 90 East: Take Exit 579 and turn left onto East Houston Street, then follow it to Frost Bank Center Drive. Turn right at Frost Bank Center Drive. Drive approximately 1 mile and turn left on Aniol Street. Turn into the second gate on your left, across from Cameron Ashley Building Products. The building will be directly in front of you.
