About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

INSTRUCTOR NOTES: CASH ONLY - Cost for the class is $15.00. This will be collected prior to the start of class. Please bring the exact amount, this is a state park not a bank! Hunter Education Class at Government Canyon State Natural Area (GCSNA) 12861 Galm Rd, San Antonio, TX 78254 Instructor: Jack Thompson 9:00 am until finished – flexible but usually around 1:00 pm DO NOT BRING FIREARMS OR AMMUNITION INTO GCSNA Parents you are welcome to stay with your student. If you decide to leave please ensure the student has a way to contact you. Once the student starts the written test, we are usually done in 30-45 minutes. If you leave be aware of the time it takes to return and re-enter the park including the waiting at the pay booth. From Culebra/FM 471 & 1604 intersection (Alamo Ranch area) head away from on San Antonio. You will pass William Howard Taft High School on your left and then cross FM 1560. You will also see the National Shooting Complex on the left and about 500 yards past the fence line you will turn right onto Galm Road at the Shell gas station. Follow Galm Road until you come to a roundabout, enter the roundabout and take the second right off of it. The Park Fee Booth opens at 0900, but you can enter early and come straight to Parking Area "A". If the Fee Booth is manned, tell them you are a Hunter Education student and you will be able to enter FREE. Pay particular attention to the speed limit and watch for people and animals while driving in the park. Enter GCSNA and follow the road about a mile to the Fee collection booth. Continue on the road until you come to a stop sign. Go straight and follow he signs to Parking lot A/B where you can park. You will see a water tower above the tree line. Walk in that direction and follow the path to the training area. We will be in the screened Exhibit Hall near the park store, restrooms and water fountain. Bring your own lunch and drinks and plan to eat while learning. The store usually has soda and candy bars, but there is NO food. Students may bring a #2 pencil & highlighter. Books and other materials are provided. CASH ONLY - Cost for the class is $15.00. This will be collected prior to the start of class. Please bring the correct amount, this is a state park not a bank!   Each student must use a unique email address, username and password in order to properly register for Hunter Education. You will need it to print out your Hunter Education completion certificate. Texas is now using an Online Registration System (ORS). You can reach the registration page from any Internet capable device. Please use the link provided below to build a unique profile for each student and sign up for the class of your choice. You have three options for taking the training.
  1. Classroom Course- 6 hours of basic instruction. Some courses may be extended in length to cover added topics. (Bring pencil & pen, lunch and drinks)
  2. Online + Field Course- Completion of an approved online course plus a 4-hour-minimum "field day" including live-fire and other skill-based activities. Register for a field course near you before completing your online course. (Bring pencil & pen, camp chair, hearing and eye protection and your lunch & drinks)
  3. Online-Only Course (ages 17 and older) - Completion of an approved online course, designed for Texas residents. You must be 17 years of age or older to register.
Be sure to remember them as you will return to this web page to print their Hunter Education Certification at a later date after the class. The system will automatically provide you with a reminder email about 24 hours before the class. Please use the information you find under the Instructor Notes on the website to get the location, directions and the start time of the class. Do not rely on the system generated email for the correct start times.
