About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

Bass Pro Shop  17907 IH-10 West  10:30AM till 4:30PM  upstairs main room by offices You will be allowed to bring snacks with you since we do not take a lunch break during the session.  We do take minor breaks for bathroom, water etc. There are no ATM's near the store and payment is in cash--$15.  Please no personal checks. *Students under thirteen are required to have a guardian (ie. etc older sibling that will be responsible for them) with them during class session. Texas hunter born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must complete this course.

    • Certification is good for life.
    • Texas certification is honored by other states and provinces requiring hunter education.
    • You must carry proof of certification or deferral on your person while hunting.
    • Proof of certification is NOT required to purchase a license.

    Who needs to take Hunter Education?

    Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete hunter education. Minimum age for certification is 9 years and cost is $15. If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:
    • under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
    • age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete hunter education, OR you must be accompanied.
    • age 17 and over, you must successfully complete hunter education; OR purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral,” and you must be accompanied.

    What does "accompanied" mean?

    Accompanied means: By a person who is at least 17, who is licensed to hunt in Texas, who has passed hunter education or is exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and you must be within normal voice control. Proof of certification or deferral is required to be on your person while hunting. Note: Proof of certification is not required to purchase a hunting license.
