About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

Amarillo Rifle & Pistol Club hosts Advanced Hunter Education Course. The Advanced Hunter Ed Course features additional instruction above that mandated for a standard short program. For six meetings students attend 2 hours of class room work. This allows the students the time to study the information in the book and the time to do hands-on training for those " New" to handling firearms safely. This also gives the instructors additional time to impart " Field Safety". An optional , weather permitting , 3 hour Field Day is included. The class has had compass instruction, in class room, and will do a compass course at days start. An Archery Review( including Cross Bow), a 15 stage " Shoot Don't Shoot" Course, and .22 rifle on 50 yard targets as well as 20 gauge on " Rolling" clay targets. Please Note: All Students will need a valid E Mail address. Students will be provided .22 target rifles as well as 20 gauge shotguns with ammo for them also. If you want to bring your own Shooting Muffs as well as Shooting Glasses, you may do so. We have those available for use. If you wear glasses they will need to be " Shatter Proof Lenses", if not they will need to be covered by over glasses shooting glasses, our available one do not go over glasses. Range Safety Rules apply at all times. I will go over the rules be for we shoot.
