About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

Safari Club International Houston is hosting their 16th annual, award winning, Hunter Education Class to be held Saturday, October 24, from 8:00 – 6:00 PM, at Long Acres Ranch in Richmond.  DIRECTIONS:  If coming from Houston: take 59 South past Sugar Land and the exit to 99/Grand Parkway.  IMMEDIATELY, get in the right lane: the Williams Way exit is at the top of the Grand Parkway overpass.  Turn RIGHT at Williams Way. Continue through the traffic light and Stop Sign PAST the large brick sign that says CITY OF RICHMOND to the next  entrance to Long Acres Ranch.  Continue on to the property through the gate(s); there will be people or signs directing you to the open-air Pavilion. This course includes the subjects already described as well as hands-on Skills Trail and Live Fire. All materials are provided; you will need to bring personals including mask, disposable gloves, hi-liter for marking in the Manual. Why attend THIS course:
  1. a) SCI Houston is paying the registration fee of $15 = NO CHARGE.
  2. b) SCI Houston is providing breakfast (donuts, kolaches, coffee) to students and family.
  3. c) SCI Houston is providing lunch prepared by Bonfire Wings to students and family.
  4. d) SCI Houston is providing water and snacks throughout the day to students and family.
  5. e) SCI Houston is offering some really cool door prizes! Prizes will also be given away for group participation.
Parents should attend with their child because:
  1. You will then know what we are teaching and help reinforce FYI, we move quickly through the material and your help may be required to make sure your child keeps up.
  2. Your child may feel more comfortable with you there and ask questions.
  3. We will be very busy presenting the best, most effective and fun learning experience possible and count on you to be in charge of discipline and adherence to safety and health protocols for yourself and your child.
  4. A parent is required to sign documents for students 16 and younger.
Pre-registration is required. This class will practice social distancing, mask requirements and follow all Ft Bend County Covid 19 guidelines. BRING: mask, gloves, water, hat, sunglasses and be prepared for the outdoors → hot or cold. BRING a hiliter to mark information in the manual you will be given. FYI parents: you may be grandfathered in Texas and not want to take Hunter Ed, but the certification will be required if you want to hunt out of state, by some Texas landowners, or outside the US.  Parent may accompany child without registering.
