About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

Cost for the class is $15.00 – PLEASE HAVE EXACT CASH When you sign yourself or a student up for this class using the Online Registration System PLEASE use the correct student name and other information. Due to social distancing requirements, parents should not plan to stay in the classroom with their student. Students always have priority seating and seats are limited. Parents please ensure your student has a way to contact you and be aware of the travel time to return. Once the students start the written test, we have about one hour left. Items to bring:

Books and other materials are provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife. The TPWD Online Registration System will automatically provide you with a class reminder via email about 24 hours before the class. About a day after the class is completed and I have entered the test scores, you will receive an email to go back to the website to print your permanent Hunter Education Certification card. Be sure to remember the username and password you set up to enroll in this class because you will need them to return to print your Hunter Education Certificate. If you must cancel it is vital that you cancel through the TPWD Online Registration System thereby allowing someone else a chance to reserve the seat. Classes are just starting up again and seats are limited due to the pandemic.
