About the Course

This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. This time does not include registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. The fee for the certification is $15. Some instructors may apply additional charges for the class, such as range or facility fees. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class.

When you arrive at the course:

  1. Pay the fee to the instructor.
  2. Attend the entire course.
  3. Take the written exam and get at least 75% correct to pass.
  4. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certification card will be available for downloading and printing from your Account Profile.

Class Details: The Hunter Education Class is conducted by the Wildlife and Natural Resources Committee and is held in the International Room on the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo grounds behind the Freeman Coliseum and Frost Bank Center. A cash payment of $15 will be collected before class starts. Checks will not be accepted. You are welcome to bring snacks and/or lunch since we do not take a lunch break. Drinks will be provided. Parents are welcome to stay and are encouraged to do so for our younger learners. If you have any questions, please contact Thom Griffith at 210-488-8781 or tdgriffith2@gmail.com. DIRECTIONS: From East Houston Street, enter through the Frost Bank Center WEST Gate, near the railroad tracks and North Onslow Street. YOU SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED FOR PARKING. “Hunter Safety” direction signs should guide you from there. After entering the gate, go straight and turn right in front of the Freeman Expo Hall. You will pass the back of the Freeman Coliseum on your right and a Security Check Point. Just past this, the International Room will be on your right, across from the Auction Barn. Look for the “Hunter Education” banner.
