About the Course

Hunting & Shooting Sports 101 courses including, but are not limited to, Deer, Turkey, Hog, Waterfowl, Dove, Upland Game, Small Game, Western Big Game, Bow Hunting, Black Powder, Crossbows, Basic Firearm, Sporting Clays, Big Bore Rifle, Handgun, Silhouettes, 3-Gun, Trapper Education and Outdoor Survival. These 3-to-8 hour, hands-on seminars and workshops are designed for family members of all ages to learn more about the animals hunted, tools used in hunting and the shooting sports, and where to go in Texas to enjoy these activities. NOTE: Advanced courses do NOT issue the required hunter education certification. However, some advanced courses, such as bow hunter education, may issue separate certifications.

There is no fee for this course. Students will learn Boone & Crockett Club (B&C) scoring techniques for white-tailed deer, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, cats, and bears.  It is a hands on workshop.  Students will physically measure each type of trophy and calculate its Gross and Net B&C Scores. Unofficial scoring kits will be provided at the workshop. Certification is available to those interested in supporting the Texas Big Game Awards Program as an Official Scorer http://www.texasbiggameawards.org/ You will need to complete an application in addition to attending the entire workshop.  Applications will be provided in class but can also be requested ahead of time by emailing david.rios@tpwd.texas.gov Texas Big Game Awards Certified Scorers are unpaid volunteers and can accept no kind of compensation for scoring trophies. You will need to invest in a scoring manual and upgraded scoring kit that includes: How to Score North American Big Game, 5th Edition (Scoring Manual) Folding carpenter’s rule w/brass extension 1/4" Steel Tape w/Ring-end 1/4" Steel Tape w/Clip-end (for pronghorn) Measuring Cable and Clip All of these items are available at Boone & Crockett Club’s online store:  https://www.boone-crockett.org/store/scoring but are often less expensive at other internet stores or at your local hardware store.
