Become a Hunter Education Instructor

Hunter Education's goals are to reduce hunting related accidents and violations; promote safe, responsible and knowledgeable hunting; and enhance hunting traditions and values. We now have more than 3,400 active instructors, including TPWD staff & game wardens, volunteers and professional educators. Instructor-led courses certify an average of 23,000 students per year.

Steps to Instructor Certification

  1. Complete the Hunter Education Student Course (https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/hunter-education) Note: If you are interested in teaching Bowhunter Education (https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/hunter-education/bowhunter-education) , you must complete the Student portion of both Hunter and Bowhunter Education, then follow the steps outlined below.
  2. Register for a Hunter Education Instructor Course - see Instructor Course Schedule (https://tpwd.elementlms.com/) . Many Instructor Courses include both hunter and bowhunter education, but most are separate offerings.
  3. Download and complete these documents. (https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/hunter-education/instructor-certification-documents)
  4. Take your completed APPLICATION and signed consent/waiver forms to the Instructor Course. TPWD staff or Area Chief teaching the instructor course will collect all applicable, signed forms and mail to Austin, Attn; Hunter Education, along with their Instructor Final Report form.
  5. Take the GAME WARDEN INTERVIEW form (blank) with you to the instructor course. If a game warden is present at the course, he/she will conduct an interview and give your completed form to the TPWD Staff member or Area Chief. If a game warden is not present at the Instructor course, please take the blank form to your local game warden. He/she will conduct a proper interview and sign the form, then send it directly to TPWD, 4200 Smith School Road, Austin, TX 78744, Attn: Hunter Education. (Please go to TPWD web site for county list of Game Wardens and their cell phone #s.)
  6. Review the required Instructor Manual (http://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_k0700_0049a.pdf) prior to attending the instructor training. After processing your application, interview, and course results, TPWD will mail you a "Congratulatory Letter/Packet" with your a name tag template and an instructor patch. Once certified, you will access your own certification card at your account page called 'dashboard' on the ORS (hunter education database) system.

Hello All,

Hunter Education Instructor

Welcome, and thank you for training with the P3 Training and Consulting. Congratulations, your Hunter Education Instructor Candidate evaluation has already begun. We are looking forward to meeting and training with you. Here is the information to make your training more enjoyable. This course is from about 9AM-1PM with Ken Lewis. There is a Treestand Safety class at 2PM. We are training at 11320 West Avenue, Suite 1207 San Antonio 78213 (second Floor, back right corner). We have a very full day with plenty of time to have fun, but no time to waste. Don’t block dumpsters. The lots are reasonably safe, but I suggest you do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Dress code is comfortable and clean. There are no other vending services available. We do have a microwave and refrigerator. You may bring your own groceries. We will not stop for lunch. I have no idea how to make this not sound rude, or otherwise. So, know that if you cannot follow the instructions in this letter, you may not be instructor material and will most likely get sent home. There is no reason I need to work harder than you for your certification. You cannot teach without the necessary items, so if you do not have what you need, you will be sent home. Registering for this class is step two in the six step process. Before you register, go to (or back to) this link (https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/hunter-education/instructor) and carefully ensure you have everything completed and you are ready. In step three, you are instructed to Download and complete these documents. They will be completed before you arrive. There is no class time to complete them. If you do not have a printer, ask yourself what a Hunter Education Instructor Candidate might do. In step four, you are instructed to Take your completed APPLICATION and signed consent/waiver forms to the Instructor Course. In step five, you are instructed to Take the GAME WARDEN INTERVIEW form (blank) with you to the instructor course. If a game warden is present at the course, he/she will conduct an interview and give your completed form to the TPWD Staff member or Area Chief. If a game warden is not present at the Instructor course, please take the blank form to your local game warden. He/she will conduct a proper interview and sign the form, then send it directly to TPWD. You may do this interview before your class if you like. I will send it in with your package. Step six is to Review the required Instructor Manual prior to attending the instructor training. We will walk through the manual in class. You may use your computer or tablet but not a phone. I suggest you print it and put it in a binder. You may occasionally need it when you conduct your classes. Remember, if there is anything missing or instruction not followed, you will be summarily dismissed. Let us know if you have any other questions. Call or text, or email training@P3TCus.com. Please stay in touch with P3 and tell your friends.
