About the Course
The Internet + Field Course is ideal for those under 17 years of age and adults wanting a more hands-on field and live-fire experience during the basic course. We recommend younger students be accompanied by an adult during the field course. The certification process consists of two parts:
- Online Course: Complete the FREE TPWD on NRA online course option.
- Field Course: Attend a course with a TPWD certified instructor. The fee for the Field Course is $15.00. Some instructors may charge additional fees associated with a shooting range or other facility.
ONLINE COURSE: Free Online courses include TPWD and NRA. For TPWD, please print out the results of the FINAL QUIZ. For NRA, please print off the Field Course Voucher. Both allow you entry to an approved Field Course. Be sure to register for a known field course near you prior to taking the online course. Note: If you search a browser for an online course, you may get information about PAY-FOR courses which apply only to those 17 years of age or older.
FIELD COURSE: A Field Course is typically completed in about 4 hours (min.) a discussion of ethics, a skills course and live-fire exercises. You must pre-register for this course, preferably before you complete the free online course.
ARRIVAL: When you arrive at the Field Course:
- Pay the $15 fee to the instructor. Some instructors may charge additional fees for a shooting range or other facility.
- Demonstrate good knowledge, skills and attitude.
- Take the written exam and score at least 75% to pass.

This field course is part of the Hunter Education Internet + Field Course Blended Learning Option, recommended for youth ages 17 and under. This option allows for most of the classroom portion of the traditional course to be completed at home, online, so that we may spend the day focused on the hands-on activities and skills.
ONLINE COMPONENT: Please allow yourself at least 2-3 hours to complete the online portion. Participants are required to complete the online portion prior to arriving and must bring proof of completion (either screen shot or printed tests). Please refer to PART 2 - https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/hunter-education/enhanced-course. The online portion is free.
SCHEDULE: Check-in will begin at 8:00am with the class starting promptly at 8:30am, we kindly ask that you arrive at least 5-10 minutes early so that we may get you checked in and start on time. We anticipate this course running through 2:30pm, with a working lunch. Please pack a sack lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.
CLASS SETTING: This is an outdoor course; dress outdoor/weather appropriate, with closed-toe shoes – no sandals, flip flops, or crocs. When planning a hunt, we always check the weather so that we may dress accordingly.
COURSE: The field course has 4 components – skills trail, live-fire with firearm handling, ethics, and an exam. Students must pass the exam with a 75% or higher to successfully complete their Hunter Education and receive their certification.
WAIVER: The James B. Harrison Foundation requires all visitors to complete a liability release waiver upon arrival. A TPWD course waiver is also required.
PARENT/GUARDIAN ATTENDANCE: A parent or guardian is required to accompany and attend this course with their youth ages 16 and under; the adult does not need to register unless they want to complete the HE Course themselves.COURSE FEE: The field course fee is $15, cash exact change please, which covers the hunter education certification and course supplies.
SUPPLIES: All course supplies and equipment will be provided, including firearms and ammo. Personal firearms and ammo are not permitted on site.
CANCELLATION: Once registered, if you can no longer attend, for any reason, please log back into this TPWD registration and CANCEL your registration so that your seat will open up for another student. Instructors cannot cancel your registration!
